What does PDF Bookmarks do?
PDF Bookmarks is a free online tool that can rewrite PDF structure and remove unreferenced parts; does not add bookmarks. The PDF result from PDF Bookmarks is a separate copy to inspect before you use it elsewhere. One possible use is existing outline behavior checked after a rewrite.
The PDF Bookmarks page currently rewrites the file with qpdf and removes unreferenced parts. It does not contain a form for entering bookmark titles, destinations or nesting levels.
Existing navigation should therefore be checked in the output rather than assumed to be newly created or repaired. If you need to add a table of contents or editable bookmark tree, choose a dedicated bookmark editor outside this tool.
This command cleans unused resources; it does not create a bookmark tree. There is no field for an outline label or destination page.
Use a proper bookmark editor if that is your goal. Check an existing outline after any rewrite.
Do not treat the page name as proof that navigation was added. For pdf structure tested before a dedicated bookmark-editing step, choose a copy whose source content suits that purpose. Keep a local source for another trial.
Rewrite PDF resources and inspect bookmarks online: steps
Before using PDF Bookmarks, decide what the new copy must contain and where it will be used. Check the existing outline and decide whether a structural rewrite is the task you need. Review the upload area and all values required by the current PDF Bookmarks form.
Choose the source
Open the outline panel to check existing navigation. For PDF Bookmarks, choose one source from your device. Keep a source copy for another attempt.
Review the form values
The PDF Bookmarks form has no extra task settings. Check the source in the file area.
Run the file task
Use Process PDF Bookmarks after checking the source and form values. Wait for the job to finish. An error means this attempt failed.
Save and check the output
Compare the bookmark tree and page destinations before and after the task, including nested entries. Store the output on your device. Name this copy separately from the original.
Inspect outline: uses for PDF Bookmarks
PDF Bookmarks can help with unreferenced parts reduced in a working copy. It can also be used for legacy file navigation reviewed for format support. The PDF result from PDF Bookmarks must suit the intended reading or editing step, so keep the source until that check is complete.
- Existing outline behavior checked after a rewrite.
- Unreferenced parts reduced in a working copy.
- Legacy file navigation reviewed for format support.
- PDF structure tested before a dedicated bookmark-editing step.
Formats and limits for PDF Bookmarks
The PDF Bookmarks form accepts PDF sources. Each PDF Bookmarks upload can be up to 300 MB, which equals 300 MiB. The allowed suffixes on the PDF Bookmarks page do not prove that a source has valid content inside it.
| Accepted formats | Maximum file size | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 300 MB per file (300 MiB upload limit) |
No new bookmarks are authored by this command. The tool name does not promise an outline will appear in a file that lacked one.
How this tool works
PDF Bookmarks uses qpdf to handle the source on the server. The PDF Bookmarks request uses your chosen input rather than any local editing project left on your device. Check the PDF contents produced by PDF Bookmarks before treating them as ready for another app or reader.
For PDF Bookmarks, your browser uploads the source to our file-processing server. This is a server task, not local editing.
Files are due for deletion within 1 hour. Cleanup runs during normal service operation. Keep a local download for future use.
