What does Color Picker do?
Color Picker is a free online tool that can compute a representative color from the whole image. The TXT result from Color Picker is a separate copy to inspect before you use it elsewhere. One possible use is owned pictures summarized for a background idea.
The color picker shrinks your whole image to one pixel and saves its color in a TXT file. You get a broad color sample for the whole picture, rather than a reading from one chosen spot.
A small red object on a large blue field may affect that sample less than the blue field. The reported tone may not match any one patch you can point to in the source.
Try it for a rough background idea, then view that color beside the picture in your design. For several colors at once, the palette tool is a closer fit.
An overall color is different from a sampled spot. A large plain background can strongly affect a one-pixel reduction.
Crop a local copy first if only one area matters. The text value needs a check in your design app. Use several swatches when a single tone cannot describe the picture.
Estimate a whole-image color online: steps
Before using Color Picker, decide what the new copy must contain and where it will be used. Choose a picture whose whole color you want to sample, rather than one spot on its edge. Review the upload area and all values required by the current Color Picker form.
Choose the source
Compare a proposed background with the whole source photo. For Color Picker, choose one source from your device. Keep a source copy for another attempt.
Review the form values
The Color Picker form has no extra task settings. Check the source in the file area.
Run the file task
Use Process Color Picker after checking the source and form values. Wait for the job to finish. An error means this attempt failed.
Save and check the output
View the returned color beside your image, and try it on the background where you plan to use it. Store the output on your device. Name this copy separately from the original.
Color value: uses for Color Picker
Color Picker can help with overall image tones compared during layout work. It can also be used for single-color placeholders tested for a preview. The TXT result from Color Picker must suit the intended reading or editing step, so keep the source until that check is complete.
- Owned pictures summarized for a background idea.
- Overall image tones compared during layout work.
- Single-color placeholders tested for a preview.
- Photo collections explored for broad palette direction.
Formats and limits for Color Picker
The Color Picker form accepts the image formats in the table sources. Each Color Picker upload can be up to 300 MB, which equals 300 MiB. The allowed suffixes on the Color Picker page do not prove that a source has valid content inside it.
| Accepted formats | Maximum file size | Output |
|---|---|---|
| JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP, TIF, TIFF | 300 MB per file (300 MiB upload limit) | TXT |
This tool does not count the most common pixel color. It also does not let you choose a point to sample.
How this tool works
Color Picker uses ImageMagick to handle the source on the server. The Color Picker request uses your chosen input rather than any local editing project left on your device. Check the TXT contents produced by Color Picker before treating them as ready for another app or reader.
For Color Picker, your browser uploads the source to our file-processing server. This is a server task, not local editing.
Files are due for deletion within 1 hour. Cleanup runs during normal service operation. Keep a local download for future use.
